NICHE: A WEEKLY PEEK AT AN EMERGING ARTIST: "Smith estimated she’s used more than 4,000 plastic bags creating her signature hand bags. 'I don’t even use plastic bags,' she said. 'I use canvas. If I get plastic, I feel like I have to hide my face.'Originally a knitter, Smith was inspired to start creating her signature purses after seeing a pattern for a large handbag woven out of plastic bags. She modified the design, which she thought was unstable, to make smaller handbags.
Her purses run $35 and can be found at the Columbia Art League, the Spare Parts Gallery and Maude Vintage."
