Ahh, clubs.
This is may be the reason I don't often DJ in Paris, but I have a love/hate relationship with 'night'clubs. I sometimes feel very comfortable in clubs, and sometimes I just can't stay in the place for more than 5 minutes. The funny thing is, this relationship is very much related to Japan as I'm more often experiencing this when I'm there.
I don't go to clubs in Paris anymore, or maybe twice a year. I don't see any reason to spend a few hours in a bad environnement with bad music. And of course I don't see why I would have to PAY to survive that !
I think my main problem with club culture is the 'club' music. I have lost almost all interest in 'house', filtered, 'let's cut the mid range and drop the bass' sound. Or at least that kind of sound for 4 HOURS, non stop. And no, replacing 'house' with 'punkrock' is not the solution. Well, anyway...
Wednesday night in Osaka was my first 'club' event this year, and I have to say it went better than expected. I was worried when I heard the kind of music the other 'DJ' was playing (bad punk rock non stop), and I wasn't feeling too well after a McTeriyaki, but everything changed when Nick arrived and gave me the occasion to leave the place and get some good food.
Momus' description of the event is very good, but I have to add that his set was the best one of the evening. I really enjoyed his selection of Sakamoto meets Summerisle, with field recordings and Toog all mixed together.
And what about Digiki ?
Well, the usual !
I still don't feel comfortable enough to drop the beats and do an all-quietness set in a club setting, but I think playing with Reich and Oval sounds was a good thing.
Thanks to everyone who came to the event (and stayed till the end!). It was a strange and interesting night.
Next: Tokyo !

Even if I'm tired of the usual Bjork tricks (Vespertine is not that good now) I can't help but simply LOVE piano track Ancestors, Rahzel's beatboxing and the Robert Wyatt song Submarine. BUT the best track is the amazing Dokaka produced Triumph Of The Heart: oh my !!!

Even with a brand new blog I forgot to write about this - I've been asked by the great Cat Jams label to work on a label sampler, Digiki style. With complete freedom and access to the whole catalogue I created (yep it's done already) a 36 minute-non-stop anti-mix called Muy neko which will hopefully be available somewhere sometimes in the near future. Tracklist and details coming soon.
