If you live in France, or if you have been following this blog in the recent months, you know that today marks the long-awaited release of TTC's new album, Batards sensibles which is probably the best thing to happen to french hip hop since....since what ? L'Atelier ?.
I'm no rapper, I'll never bother you with my 'those new kids can't keep it real this ain't fresh', but I think my ears know when something amazing is happening. And trust me, Batards sensibles is incredible. We've been waiting for this for months, it sure could have been better but man, this is the future. It's 300 years away from your usual boring hip hop, this is avant garde! And I don't mean the sound, I mean everything. Dans le club is of course the single of 2004, still ultra fresh after months of heavy rotation (well, at least here at Castellane), and no, they are NOT saying Digiki assure. But even before this amazing Para One production, track one, Ebisu rendez-vous is the perfect opener, and a very good 'first time in Tokyo' song. If Le champ des hommes is almost pop, we are back to post, post hip hop with Catalogue (name dropping, labels, fashion) with a beat that reminds me of dDamage (no surprise here). The BIG surprise comes with the title track Batard sensible, one of the most impressive track of the year: it has everything (glitched beats, blips, synth, bassline, beautiful vocals, good lyrics, pop elements, live instruments). Just for this track (and other favorites: J'ai pas sommeil, Girlfriend (Orgasmic rules !!), Codeine (man, that beat!!) and of course Dans le club) you have to buy this album. And learn french cause the lyrics are very very unique. And go to Big Dada website and listen to it. What else could you ask for ? A pair of TTC Etnies shoes and a Digiki remix ? well, maybe. But Right now YOU. MUST. BUY. THIS !

Should I buy a BIG hard drive (1 To) and sell all my CDs and analogs ?
Who cares about vinyl in 2004 ? Why should we continue to give money to an industry that has yet to understand the necessity to adapt itself to new rules and evolutions ?
What is a 'record label' nowadays ? To me its main function is to work as a 'creative lab', selling sounds in (small) quantities in whatever format should work (CDs? ringtones ? mp3s? Tshirts? gigs? remixes?) but mainly selling itself as an avant gardist unit, taking risks, blending genres and moving forward.
Let's dare.

I'm still clearing my list of projects (Shugo Tokumaru mix completed!), in fact making room for Darsh and Digiki related projects.
I spent the evening with Gilles (Toog) and Flo, going back to our usual winter mix of 24, talks and soundplay. As Florence has (already!) done a wonderful cover art for Animals... I played it once again. They found it great, happy, full of sonic explosions, I found it terribly exhausting, too-full, even under 50 minutes. I have to move to something else, forget it for two months and then rediscover the whole thing. Sounds like an oblique strategy: bury it and rediscover it in two months.
It's really strange to have such a long time project (started in August 2003) coming to an end, edited, mixed, and ready for release in only two weeks, after multiple delays and deadlines. And I don't know where it's going to be available after the one week download on the site in december as I have NO news from my japanese label, HATTRICK. Even its website is gone !
So for the moment Kitchen and Animals are two sides of the same illusion, virtual records with real people.
Anyway, if the records never get proper releases (anyone interested ?) I'll put them back on the rack and move to something else. When I have a new laptop that is, my PowerBook battery died this weekend.
Life is good, we have the Sea and Cake !

upcoming: Shugo Tokumaru - Light chair (Digiki remix)
it's very simple, silence everywhere, bonus beats at the end (I should make a My first beats release as my beats are getting simpler, almost naive - oh! a kick ! here a snare !)
but for once it's not too far from a song format - ie it's (maybe) pretty boring !

Chienloup strikes back.
I spent the evening with DJ Chienloup, who gave me his finished mix for the Kitchen remix, and it's one of the best thing I've heard for this project. I played him the work in progress mix of Animals don't care, which sounds very good (for once !), maybe I'm getting better at mixing things ?
We listened to a new Towa Tei track from his forthcoming fourth album, very good stuff.
I received from Brazil two short introductions for Animals. Thanks Della !
As the dog themed evening had already started I ended up searching for shiba inu.

Think what you want about Klub des Loosers but Baise les gens and Sous le signe du V (produced by AIR) are good.

- Marxy has posted his remix of Kitchen on his website. Check it out for a very different point of view on Digiki.
- I like the new Warp records DVD WarpVision, even if it appears to be uncomplete (there was a video for Aphex's Ventolin right ?). The TDR design is amazing as usual, and you get a very good mix CD by our heros Zilla and Buddy Peace, one of the most creative DJ team now. What a job to mix 15 years of Warp !
