Pass pass pass

I received this mail from Matthew McKeethan at least a month ago (sorry for the delay in reply !) and now Patrick is asking too ! so here's my Musical baton thing !

Total volume of music on my computer:
78.61 Go on this PC...+9.35 Go on the PowerBook (not counting iPods, external drives etc)

The last album I purchased was:

Cuiziner - Pour les filles street tape album
best mix CD this year so far. Amazing. And so funny !

Song playing right now:
Mariah Carey - It's like that (instrumental)
good instrumental, kind of back to old school...

Five songs I've been listening to a lot recently, from several genres:
hey I love albums too !

Isolée - Jelly baby fish
From Wearemonster, best electronic album this year so far, so much better than his first album...very inspirational

Fishmans - Season (live at Liquidroom 1997)
we've been talking a lot with Mai Ueda about our favorite bands, and I think the winning japanese trio is still Plastics/Boredoms and Fishmans. I love Fishmans...you know that already ! Yeah Scha Dara Parr too ;)

Darsh - J'cruise taille basse
it's the Darsh single for summer ! we need a label but with songs like that we can fill clubs anywhere ! (ok, maybe not in Paris ;)

Gwen Stefani - Hollaback girl (instrumental)
Isn't this a great Neptunes production ? ok the Missy 'on & on' is AMAZING too, but the bitcrushed fanfare is so cool !!

Juan Maclean - Dance with me
DFA again...I like the way this starts...

bonus: Daft Punk - Technologic (Basement Jaxx remix)
I don't like house music that much now (except Alan Braxe of course !) but this remix is CRAZY. Really ! It's impossible not to dance with a track like that !

Five people to whom I will pass this musical baton:

tell me what you got....

Channing
Romain
Eric
Remi
and...

No last live

The live at Point Ephemere this saturday is CANCELED because they got no reservation/pre-sales (!!!). This is SO fuckin' disappointing I can't believe it. I can play clubs thousands of miles away from Paris but I can't play a freakin show in my hometown ???? what's the fuck is that ? and cancel a planned show TWO DAYS before ???

I'm doing a new album, for the FRIENDS, for the FANS, things ARE happening elsewhere; goodbye Paris.

Pop musik

That's exactly the problem with pop music now: we're crushed under the weight of the past, and of our excessive respect for it. Pop music used to be an ugly, messy, unfinished place with lots of space for growth (a kind of Berlin), now it's all been cleaned up, it's tidy, it's documented, it's the Louvre, it's Paris, it feels finished.
says pop artist Momus.

Of course he's right, but maybe it's time ro realize that hip hop and electronic music ARE today's pop music. The Neptunes, Isolée, Juelz Santana, or even Digiki are 21st century pop music. No question about it. Coldplay, Radiohead, The Whatevers or even Momus are 20th century pop music. I don't see any problem with that (do you ?).

I am a 21st century pop music maker (I started recording in 2001), I've never been through the usual "I was in a punk band in the 90s, then I discovered house music and became a DJ" scenario. I've always been using a computer, never ever an instrument. I like guitars, pianos and drums, but that's not my job. And I will always find more interesting to use sounds on Google and sample last month MTV hits than to spend time making loops out of super rare/out of print vinyls and buying vintage amps. In 20 years what I'm doing will surely be considered as early century soundwork. Is that a problem ? Oh and remember: pop music means POPular MUSIC.

Eno day

Brian Eno is back with a new album, and I can't wait to hear it. The cover is beautiful, and it's apparently full of songs !

I've been using Oblique Strategies a lot, for everything. It's the only reason I might buy a PDA one day, to have Oblique Strategies in my pocket, everywhere I go.

UPDATE: there's now an Oblique Strategies widget for Mac OS X Tiger !! here Now I need a Personal Strategy Assistant :) Maybe a reconverted Clié ?

Musique Concrete, Discrete music

Concrete is now completed and ready to be sent to labels. Thanks to everyone who participated in this project, we are very happy with the result. Feedbacks have been very positive so far (thanks guys !), I'm sure we'll find a way to release it.

We are now working on Concrete remixed version, Discrete. I won't tell you about the great artists involved in the project, but if things go well Discrete will be very, very exciting. I've never seen such a positive reception with any of my past works. The remixers list is...HOT.

Technorati Japan launched

Do you use Technorati? I subsribed to some feeds last month, but I haven't use it too much for the moment. There's still a lot of (information) noise in the results (or maybe it's normal part of the blogosphere?)

Anonymity is valued more highly in Japan than in the U.S. (for comparison's sake.) That has been the culture on the Japanese Internet in the past and it is clear that this trend will continue with Japanese weblogs. Many Japanese Internet users have pointed to a strong diary ('nikki') culture that has been a strong part of Japanese written culture for many hundreds of years. Some Japanese believe that "blogs" are an extension of Japanese diaries, which may be the cause of many personal diary-type blogs in Japan.

What more can I say ?

Well, good question Hov. It's so difficult to post clever things on a blog when there's so much intelligence elsewhere. I haven't post anything on business/technology in a long time cause I've been mostly blogging on my research (private) blog, which is a good way to keep track.
Most recent posts here have been on Darsh, because, yeah, those 10% of my time I use for music were spent on Concrete. No new Digiki track on the horizon for the moment.
I spent some time trying online communities, like Myspace or Mixi, but I'm not sure if I'm good at networking.
While we're on the 'meeting people is easy' topic, we are preparing the remix/take 2 version of Concrete, and we need remixers. Who should we contact ? What would be your dream tracklist of a Darsh/Digiki remix album ?
You know me better than I do.

We are late. Or should I say, I am late, late of setting impossible to meet deadlines on my own production. 10% of my time is for music production, no more, and often less than that. Between an eye condition that won't go anytime soon (might be permanent), work to do (I'm a 'marketing strategy analyst' remember ?), my move to Japan to finalize (still got to get my visa), there's not much time to work on music (I forget to add to the tight schedule: friends to see, films to go, a few parties, a 24 season 4 addiction and a complete Simpsons season 5 DVD set to watch). And guess what ? when I'm finally in front of my sound editor ideas take time to form into something half satisfying. No genius, sorry. So yes, I am late again. We were supposed to put the new Darsh single online on May 19th, it's now June 2nd and it's still not happening. But it will ! soon (or later).
There's so much more to come. Honest. Three more singles and then some Digiki. Hopefully !
