Where were you in 92 ?
Friday, September 21st, 2007Out tomorrow everywhere.
I’m no sneakers expert, but to me the Air Jordan 8 (or VIII, whatever) is perhaps the last design of an era. They are ultimately 90s pop. After this pair Nike and Jordan Brand broke the magic marketing + sport hero + performance + crazy unique design formula and started releasing Jordan shoes completely unconnected to Basketball and Jordan started Baseball and then returned to the NBA but by then my interest was long gone.
I have close to zero interest in Jordan brand after this pair (but I like the Spik’Ike because at least Nike is playing around with materials and shapes and is in a way remixing their products; this could very well become a cult shoe from the 00’s). Anyway, Nike is clever playing with our memories, the 90s, our first sneakers, the guy that had the first pair of Reebok Pumps, the shoes bought on the trip to NY, the air max, pegasus, Agassi, 180… haa we were young.
Last time I was in Paris I saw some kids, maybe 10 or 12, wearing Jordan 3, of course some re-release, and it made me really happy: classic design never dies. Now time to create really inspiring, cutting edge designs for the years to come.
