Steve & Bill
Monday, June 4th, 2007There’s been a lot of talk online about the long-awaited discussion between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates at the All things digital conference last week. Expectations were high, and most anticipated a great on stage fight between the two ‘rivals’. Well, if you were in for a bloodbath, you must have been very disappointed: nothing happened. Or did something very special happen instead ?
I watched the whole thing (not the nighlights mind you) and I found it very, very interesting. Inspiring, actually. No new products were announced, Steve didn’t trash talk Microsoft and Bill was surprisingly good and relaxed. But above all the very topic of the discussion wasn’t the iPod or is Vista better than Mac OS X, but how two guys became what they are today. The message was clear: it’s about passion, commitment, making mistakes and learning from them, believing in something (hint: not money), being excited about your job and the people you work with. And this essential dimension of the discussion was even lost to some of the audience, as someone asked during the Q&A how to create some of the value that you guys have done. It’s not about the value. It’s about the passion, and the people.
Inspiring discussion for any entrepreneur out there. Watch the whole thing here.
